New narratives

Asmaa Malik
Graduate Program Director and Professor, Journalism

As the inaugural YSGPS Scholar-in-Residence, Professor Asmaa Malik is engaging in research to identify best practices in graduate advising by examining how issues of equity, empathy and expectations shape the student-supervisor experience. Her scholarship will specifically explore how supervisors can better support students from marginalized groups.

How do you support graduate students to become career-ready?

We help students identify their personal and professional goals so that their graduate experience prepares them for the professional world. It’s also important to ensure they have a clear-eyed view of the kinds of skills employers are looking for and that they are connected to professional mentors, as well as formal and informal networks within their field.

What skills do students need to succeed in today’s environment?

Whether students are pursuing master’s degrees in Journalism or in Urban Planning, critical thinking skills remain essential. So many industries are dealing with the challenges of rapidly changing technologies and dramatic shifts in consumer habits. Students need to not only be able to adapt to these changes, but to understand how they will shape the future of their careers.

What does the future of journalism look like?

With renewed public interest in news and information that is relevant and essential to civic participation and with the rapidly advancing technologies enabling its creation and distribution, there are more opportunities than ever for journalists to change their industry – and the world.
